"Holy Grail" of Energy Found in France

Welcome back to some more good news!

This week, we have a lot of good news for green energy. From new sources of hydrogen to sustainability movements surrounding energy, this week is full of improvements in power. Dive in!

Science

A Pinnacle Form of Energy Found

Hydrogen drilling facility in Nebraska, Yale e360

  • Two French scientists went digging for fossil fuels in northeast France

  • A few hundred meters down, they found white hydrogen

  • The deposit “could contain between 6 million and 250 million metric tons of hydrogen”

  • The reason white hydrogen is so attractive is that it only produces energy and water when burned

  • But, it’s hard to find pure hydrogen on earth

  • White hydrogen is extremely sought after, this discovery can power the climate movement

Business

A New Wave of Green Energy

  • 96% of new power generation plants were carbon-free in 2024

  • Listed in order:

    • Solar (60%)

    • Batteries (23%)

    • Wind (10%)

    • Fossil fuel (4%)

    • Nuclear (2%)

  • The US has a goal to decarbonize the entire grid by 2035, which is tough considering the highly polarized political landscape

Politics

Abu Dhabi Releases New Sustainability Tool

  • Abu Dhabi introduces new tool MARSDNA

  • MARSDNA measures business’s progress on certain environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

  • Intended for maritime pollution measurements

  • A step in the right direction for the fossil-fuel dependent economy, but we will have to see how much of a benefit it produces

Activism

HUGE Sustainability Movement in Europe

  • The National Trust, a conservation charity focused on protecting beautiful landscapes across Europe

  • Revealed new plans to create 250,000 hectares (equivalent to 500,000 soccer fields placed next to each other)

  • Size is equivalent to 1.5 times the size of Greater London

  • Projected to take place over the next 10 years, ending in 2035
